Using the injection molding process in DFM Concurrent Costing, can I estimate per part cost and mold cost for family molds? In order to estimate the costs of family molded parts, all parts within the family should be arranged so they nest within a rectangle of minimum area while maintaining at least a two inch gap between adjacent part surfaces. All software inputs should be treated as though this nested part arrangement represents a single part. For example, the dimensions of the rectangle containing the nested family of parts should be entered in place of the part envelope dimensions. The total volume and projected area of all parts within the family should be entered in place of the part volume and part projected area inputs. The number of cavities now indicates the number of families per mold; this will usually be one. It should be noted that analyzing family molding in this manner will produce final estimated times and costs that apply to the entire family. The total cost for the family of parts will be indicated by the part cost and a breakdown of the individual part costs within the family are not available. |
